3 pieces of luggage lost on each flight
Globally, 6 bags are mishandled per 1,000 passengers. That works out to 3 pieces of luggage lost on an average Boeing 747 or Airbus 380 carrying 500 passengers. That is on each flight.
Smaller carriers, which also fly smaller airplanes, have a much worse ratio. At American Airlines’ regional carrier Envoy Air, it’s 8 bags per 1,000 passengers.
While in the US the overall ratio is lower, at 4 bags per 1,000 passengers, that works out to 1 missing bag on each flight carrying 200 passengers.
